It’s Table Season: Your Table Styling Guide

by Blain Mikkonen

Falling temperatures, browning soybeans, and a September packed with fairs and markets.  Fall has snuck up to on us again which means football season is in full swing, golf season is dwindling, and Halloween is on the horizon.  We don’t need to speculate what the weather may threaten in November; what we do know is that the last couple months of the year are a time for family gathering.

If we’re being honest, Thanksgiving and Christmas planning isn’t that far away.  It’s table season!

The dining table is the primary gathering place for friends and family during the holiday season.  We want to help you make this holiday gathering even more special so we’ve put together a dining table style guide.

Here I’ve outlined what’s trending in the dining room including, dining table designs, popular table finishes, and some tablescape decorating tips and tricks for this holiday season.  We’re not table styling experts but we’ve done the research so you don’t have to. Check it out…

3 Popular Table Styles

We’ve built seemingly hundreds of different dining table combinations but our most popular style has undoubtedly been variations of the Frederick Farmhouse.  A couple of our other popular styles include the Maria spindle base and a variety of metal pedestal-like bases.  Below are photos of each popular style.  More of our custom tables can be found here: https://graindesigns.com/dining-tables/ or on our Facebook page here.

Maria - Reclaimed Wood Farmhouse Spindle Dining Table with White Base and Apron - Unstained

Custom Tapered Steel Leg Dining Table and Bench - Dark Walnut

3 Unique Finishes

We’re all aware of the home trends… oak floors of the 90s, maple cabinets in the 2000s, and now stark white kitchens.  It’s hard to imagine that the current trend of white and grays all over will last forever.  However, one thing is for sure that wood will never go out of style.  Wood is timeless and has been the most commonly used material in home construction and home finishes since the late 1800s.  Color trends may come and go but wood tones will never be out of style.

I’ve outlined some of our most popular finishes below, followed by complimentary photos.

3 Table Decorating Tips

We can build a beautiful table but when it comes to preparing the meal and setting the table, the Grain Designs team is pretty under qualified. Pat may argue he has some Martha Stewart magic, but beyond the grill, we’re not taking any chances on him.  I’ve done a little research and outlined some fall trends and tips to help dress up your table for your big family gathering!

  1. Seasonal “greenery” and pumpkins are the obvious choice for fall.  Make it your own by adding some handwritten text or jump on Etsy and support, Laura Hooper, another small business owner that is adding calligraphy to your table.
  2. Make it personal.  Free printable place cards that you can customize for your guests from Fantabulosity.com. This is an easy yet impactful addition to the table ensures your guests feel right at home.  Photo from fantabulosity.com

  3. Keep it simple.  Focus on a table runner and centerpiece; lose the linens to set simple, elegant place settings.  This can look great and allows you to focus on what is most important this holiday season; spending time with family and the conversations that happen around the dinner table.  Photo from: https://designedsimple.com/
