Since our inception in 2013, Grain Designs has grown from an apartment garage, to multiple locations in Fargo, and then to a rural property that we called the Pines in 2014. We made this property our permanent home in 2018, purchasing the property and launched our sister company The Pines Weddings & Events.

The progression of our studio space is a visual understanding of our dreams for gd and where we started. Our first shop was in a two-stall garage apartment garage of GD partner Blain Mikkonen. No heat, no air, but here the dream was started
From there we grew into our first “OFFICIAL” address as Grain Designs in West Fargo complete with a custom reclaimed basketball hoop, pull-up bar, and our first office
In 2014 we had the opportunity to expand our operations and rent a farm shop southwest of Fargo . This was the perfect rural location with room to grow, and hit golf balls around the yard. I guess you could call this location Grain Designs world headquarters; internally we called it “The Pines” to differentiate the property from our other shop location.
We took on more expansion in 2018 with the addition of a Fargo furniture showroom, Grain Designs Home + Office. Our first permanent showroom allows customers to view and shop furniture, review wood or metal finish samples, or shop our line of custom signs and home decor products. In addition to expanding the Grain Designs brand we made ‘The Pines’ our permanent home and purchased the entire property! With this purchase we added capacity for growth and started a new venture, The Pines Weddings & Events!
With the new shared property of GD/Pines, there was lots of under utilized acreage that we were wanting to take advantage of. With a proof of concept and 3 awards for Best Wedding Venue in the valley under our belt. We broke ground on the newest building on property, Pines Black. Construction completed in June of 2022 and with it 2 more Best Wedding Venue awards have followed.
Now, after 10+ years on property, this is how the property sits… for now. Ideas area always floating on how we can best use the space we have and how it can be expanded or improved. Stay tuned because who knows what might come next!
In collaboration with Rhet Architecture and Epic Built, Grain Designs helped bring Pines White—an upscale barn-inspired wedding and event venue outside Fargo, ND—to life. Featuring rustic wood farmhouse tables, custom sliding barn doors, a handcrafted bar, and outdoor ceremony furnishings, the venue blends agricultural heritage with modern elegance to create a timeless space for weddings and events.
Opened in 2022, Pines Black is the second barn-like wedding venue at The Pines Weddings & Events near Fargo, ND. Grain Designs contributed custom furniture and architectural details throughout, including 45 solid wood folding event tables, 16 modern sliding barn doors, and extensive ash wood finishes for walls, countertops, and bars. Blending agricultural heritage with modern elegance, Pines Black offers an upscale setting for weddings and events
Kava Construction partnered with Grain Designs in Fargo, ND to transform their office with reclaimed wood feature walls and custom office furniture. We designed a statement industrial conference table inspired by towering grain elevators, a bold reception desk, and an angled executive desk with a live edge top. Each piece combines solid hardwood, hot rolled steel, and brand-driven details to create a modern industrial office that reflects Kava’s identity in the agriculture construction industry.
Grain Designs partnered with Dakota Medical Foundation to craft custom conference tables for their large boardroom. The boardroom tables embody the organization’s values of foundation, connection, and collaboration. Built with robust steel bases and locally sourced wood, these tables symbolize strength, community, and impact—transforming the boardroom into a space where relationships and ideas flourish.
